Reporting to the Assistant Manager or Manager – Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE), this position assists with company safety & environmental activities to assure compliance with legal requirements utilizing economical, effective, efficient & friendly concepts.

This position will be based out of the Global Headquarters in Chicago, IL and will work directly with the company’s Power Systems Solutions (PSS) Division to provide technical support, and guidance to leadership and team members on safety & environmental matters. The PSS Organization performs maintenance, service and repair work on Manufactured equipment at customer/client locations throughout the globe.

Along with PSS work, this role will require work in a factory manufacturing setting supporting High Voltage Product Testing, HSE assessments  along with other HSE activities. This role requires periodic travel to conduct various activities related to safety and environmental, such as but not limited to; on-site safety assessments/audits, observations, leadership workshops, safety training, etc. 

Relevant Experience Required:

  • One to Four (or more) years of experience in Health & Safety, or related experience in Electrical Utility or Equipment Manufacturing environment. 
  • Experience working with Low and High electrical voltage, along with Electrical Utility equipment work, repair and maintenance
  • Experience in Electrical Utility Equipment (e.g., Substations, Transmission Lines, Underground Collection Systems, or other similar equipment)
  • Accredited Health and Safety certifications recommended (e.g., Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Occupational Health Safety Technician (OHST), etc.)

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in; Occupational Health and Safety (or similar) and/or Environmental Science, or Electrical Engineering
  • Understanding and knowledge of regulatory health and safety standards (e.g., OSHA, CALOSHA, NFPA, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Electrical Utility/Transmission Equipment functionality
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety management programs related to electrical safety, including high voltage work practices
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to simultaneously handle a variety of safety & health projects and assignments and to bring an effective approach to the solution of technical objectives
  • Self-Motivated, high-performer with ability to identify problems & come up with corrective actions
  • Demonstrated sustained high-level performance in safety & health functions with strong oral and written communication skills.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinate all aspects of HSE Program including training for current and new team members.
  • Maintain and manage safety & training program across the various regions by using internal Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Refine existing health and safety programs and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency, or eliminate their need.
  • Maintain documents showing compliance with programs and procedures. (ISN, BROWZ & other websites as needed)
  • Support PSS to develop Site Safety Plans including audit requirements, procedures, and practices needed for compliance with customers’ site safety requirements.
  • Perform Site Safety Observations for High Voltage Test Cages, Field Service, Smart Grid, and Major Projects Sites (i.e. Substation work and Utility related services).
  • Coordinate accident and incident Investigations, determine probable cause into near misses/accidents/injuries and make recommendations for corrective actions and changes in practice and policy.
  • Track Federal, State and Local safety & environmental regulations and evaluates their effects on company operations.
  • Interface with Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Technology, Quality, Purchasing, Legal Affairs and others to meet assigned safety & environmental objectives.
  • Establish and coordinate facility observations, audits and inspections to assure all facility operations are in compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations and corrective actions are completed and documented.
  • Provide electrical safety oversight for energized and de-energized work, safety & environmental guidance and advice for existing operations, programs and procedures. These may include but are not limited to: Behavior Based Safety (BBS) programs, Location Emergency Response Plan (LERP); Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC); Hazard Communication and GHS, Safety Data Sheets, TSCA, fire prevention. LOTO, Confined Space, Ergonomics, PIV, Asbestos, industrial air and noise monitoring, sustainability and waste management compliance, waste minimization, pollution prevention, air emissions, wastewater discharge and monitoring, ERT, Safety Action Teams (SAT), DOT, OSHA requirements and proactive incident prevention and injury reduction.
